What the unsubscribe link does

In the sample email, the unsubscribe link opens this page. In a real email, the same link belongs to one recipient and takes them off that business’s list in one click.

In a real email

  1. Every marketing email carries the recipient’s own unsubscribe link, in the footer beside the sender’s name and mailing address, and in the email’s headers (List-Unsubscribe with one-click, RFC 8058), so a mail app that supports it can show its own Unsubscribe button.
  2. Opening the link changes nothing. It shows a short confirmation page with one button. Mail scanners open links before a person does, so a visit alone never unsubscribes anyone.
  3. One press unsubscribes, straight away. The button on that page, or the mail app’s own one-click button, suppresses the address for that business. No login, no reason asked, no reply needed.
  4. It is permanent for that business. No further marketing email goes to the address, even if the business imports it again later.

Nothing on this page records anything, and there is no form here: this sample has no real recipient and no real list.
